So I built my nesting box last night. The boxes are 12" x 12" each. I only have four hens so i know 3 boxes are a bit overkill but I'd like to get more chickens down the road so figured I'd build big now.

Nice job!

12x12 are fine for medium sized birds.

Some will say you need bigger, like 18x18, but unless you plan on having the "larger" breeds, these look perfect.

Once placed, you should consider a landing roost in front.

At least they will be able to stand up to turn.

Probably tight, but should work fine with the standing room.

My compromised size is 16x16x16.

My largest breed are buffs, that have no issues.

They are a bit larger than the reds, which I also have.

Ok. Thanks for the info. I made the roof slope so much so they wouldn't roost on it being it's sitting on the floor. I'll see how this works and if need be I'll make bigger ones.

Nice job!!
You might want a taller front(3-4") at the bottom to hold eggs and bedding inside.
I went 14 x 14 x 16.

Thanks. I was going to do a larger front but when I put it on it looked like the opening was a bit small so I cut it down to 2.5". I have plenty of wood left over so I can add a new piece if I find its too low. Thank you everyone for all the input. I love this site.
