Nesting box curiosity

My hens are going to lay soon. We had had the nesting boxes blocked off, so they wouldn't sleep in them, but now we unblocked it and they just pulled all of the straw out and now its all over the ground!!!! how can i stop this or teach them an alternative.

The 'lip' on the nesting boxes may not be high enough. Chickens readily knock the bedding out of nest boxes with a 2 or 3 inch lip.
