nesting box design

My boxes seem to work there nothing special !!

Our boxes are low. About 11" from the floor (but the bedding is obviously above the floor). They also stick out of the coop. The bins slide out.

I'm not sure if I need to add a step...dh said he can put a 4 x 6 on the floor there. Our girls aren't laying yet.

eta: that pic makes the top look flat but it's sloped. Like so:

I prefer plastic nest boxes, if possible. Easier to sanitize and one less place for mites/poultry ticks to live. If you have a broody hen, the plastic can be rinsed, disinfected and dusted or sprayed with bug sprayed without worrying that there are seams that could be missed where mites could hang out and infect her or the little ones, since mites love to infest broodies while their whole immune system is depressed from all that sitting/lack of eating.
I also like movable boxes, unless your set-up requires the boxes to be in a certain place. Allows for training a confused pullet to lay in her box.

What size are your nesting boxes? The ones we have now are about 12" x 12" (not sure how deep), but I was thinking of a little bigger for the new coop...maybe 12" x 15" or so (not sure how deep they need to be either).

The are 12 deep 18 high and 14 wide. Roughly. We made them to fit larger birds as we will never have small ones. And to fit the opening and door size for our set up. But truth be told I really don't think it matters. There are pictures of 5 chickens in one box on here somewhere.
