Nesting Box Dilemma

@R2elk .... Got a pic?
Curious how you screwed to front(top) of bucket.
I screwed 'anti roll' to bottom(side).
they didn't like them tho....too small.

I didn't actually use a bucket because I had a large (tree size) pot. The piece of plywood goes in front and I ran the screws (short enough to not go the whole way through the wood) through the lip of the planter into the plywood. Looking at your picture, the bucket has a lip that the screws could go through into the wood. The wood could just as easily be a piece of 1" as any thickness of plywood as long as the plywood is thick enough to hold the screw.

It has been quite awhile since I made it and I remembered wrong. I ran the screws through the plywood and into the lip of the planter. There is a third screw not visible in the photo which is at the bottom and also screwed into the lip of the planter.

I think I'll cut out the lid for easy cleaning. I haven't done it yet so I drew it on this old 5 gallon bucket. I love 5 gallon buckets! I have 2 bucket nipple waterers, one is automatic with a toilet valve kit in it that's been tapped into some pvc under the house

I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it up right or put it on its side.

All of those are really smart!! We are thinking that we are going to go down the 5 gallon bucket way! Thank you!

We put a cat carrier as our 1st nesting box. Does this work or what do I need to change?

I put in another nesting box. I cut out part of the lid on a 5 gallon bucket and layed it on the ground in their coop. No one has gone into either nesting boxes that I know of waiting to see if they go in!

You can use a cardboard box for a nest. I use plastic "milk" crates and plastic vegetable crates.
Ditto that! I had a hard time getting my current hens to use their intended nesting boxes I had made because they loved this particular box in my shed. The box was hard to get inside because it was pushed all the way underneath a shelf but they would line up every day to get a turn. Mind you, I did have hay and straw in these boxes for my rabbit hay racks so this might be why they misunderstood....
