Nesting Box question

Hello..My nesting boxes are even with the floor of the chicken coop..you can see from the avatar picture.... The opening for the chickens to get into the box is approx. 9" the boxes are 12x12 inches..the floor board runs across the length of the three boxes(keep pine shavings out of boxes) and a board at the top which also runs the length of the boxes are both 1x2...so this reduces the opening...I thought about cutting a half circle on the top boards to open it up alittle...What do you all think? Will the 9" be enough or open them up? Hope this is not confusing...thank you...terribob

First of all, welcome to the BYC flock! We are glad you joined us!

Unless you have a very large breed of bird, your hens should have no problem getting through the 9" height from floor level. Plus, they may actually prefer the smaller opening as it may give them more of a sense of security

Hello...thanks for the welcome...we have 4 birds...Barred Rock(my fav), Rhode Island Red, Buff Orpington, and a Silver Laced Wyndotte..

We got our first egg today...my wife was so excited...she found it on the coop floor...so I opened up the boxes today...upon a real measurement the opening was 6" so I took my saw and arched the top out and I will post a picture of the revision...it's closer to 9" now and looks better...

Thanks for taking the time...we are new at this...so any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you..the Coop turned out ok..glad you liked it..built it this summer...it was so very hot here in Georgia... it took me forever to get it done..take care

Thank you very much...my wife and I worked the coop out together...she was the sounding board...the vents were her idea they are air conditioner vents that adjust...works great...take care
