Nesting Box?

What is the purpose of a nesting box? Is that where they sleep? Lay eggs? thanks!

The nesting box is for them to lay eggs in, goal is to have them only lay eggs in there so the eggs are cleaner!

Instinct should tell them to lay in a safe comfortable place.

Nesting box should be in a safe comfortable place (small enough, to be comfy but not too small) off the ground, and material that will help keep the egg secure and protected from the elements and "preditors."

Not all chickens have this instinct, but can learn it.

edit: They can learn by you putting in an egg "decoy" ie golf balls, or plastic egg filled with sand.
