nesting boxes...4 sides ok?

Designing my first coop. Re: nesting boxes...is 4 sides (floor, back and 2 sides) ok or do they need a "top"?

I would put a top on it to keep any of the chickens from pooping into the box from above.

I've read that many hens will share one box. Is one box enough for 4-5 hens or is two a better bet?

two, they lay at about the same time and don't always stand in line, some will lay two in one box at the same time!
