Quick question: Do chickens (not Cornish X) raised for meat need nesting boxes? I've read that some of the breeds I'm considering need 5 or so months to reach butchering weight, but would they need, or benefit from, nesting boxes? Thanks in advance for your reply...

What would a rooster need a nesting box for?

I don't think any chicken needs a nesting box. Those chickens that lay eggs will appreciate a nesting box.

I figured straight run would be cheaper, but now that I'm looking at my catalogs again I see that's not the case. Anyhoo, I thought I'd process both the hens and roosters if I got straight run...
This may need more forethought.

If you do not plan on raising them to egg laying age (greater than five months) there is no reason for a nesting box.

They'll lay either way, and it isn't necessary, but if you keep them past laying age, nesting boxes will prevent you from having to hunt for eggs.
