nesting boxes

I have 28 hens, how many nesting boxes should I have. They lay all day and I guess I don't have enough

6 should be enough.

So they do share nesting boxes? Because I have oat straw on the floor for warmth and they sometimes lay right out in the middle of the 12x16 barn. Some boxes NEVER get used so I am still new to the chicken business lol Still trying to figure them out. Thanks

How many do you have?

well I have 18, but they are 3 different kinds. However most of them they don't use, I think they are too small. But of the 9 left they only use maybe 5 and some lay right out in the open
