nesting boxes

I'm using 2 wire rabbit nesting boxes with hay at the moment and they work very well. I've also used just plain carboard boxes (like the thick kind you get when buying produce....clementines and such). Chickens will use most anything as long as they can fit their body in it....no need to get fancy in my opinion.

I was thinking about using 5 gallon buckets myself, and I think they would work fine. My husband built me nice boxes out of some left over 2X10 and we covered them with a rubbermaid container cut in half. Our girls just started laying and they like the boxes just fine.

My husband built an egg-box in a fit of chicken-ing, but we use those plastic bucket totes with the rope handles for the patio area. We just fill them with straw, and there's a waiting line...

Whatever you have lying around will work. Anything that is more or less 1' by 1' by 1', or a bit larger. My new flock's favorite is an upturned kitty litter box top. Some of mine prefer an open front box, and others prefer an open top box. My older hens have abandoned a nice wooden nest box, which used to be the favorite, for a cardboard box.

My husband built a community nest box - I only have 7 laying hens & it fits better in the coop that way. So far it works great. I got the dimensions off of BYC posts. I think if you search the site you can find info on them.

My girls use a covered cat litter box. I put some bedding in for cushioning and they love it. They all laid their first eggs in it.

Here are pics of mine.

My sister saw a book shelf at some flea market the one that has the little sections. Work well however I left the door open and now I have to rebuild another one because it poured down raining and destroyed it.
