nesting boxes

I built "emergency" nest boxes out of recycling bins, and my hens loved them! These are stackable bins like storage bins, about 16 by 20 inches, as I'm not sure they are used throughout the country like they are here. I put one up on 4 by 6 timbers, and screwed a plywood top on it. Now that I've put back the original nests (new coop), they actually seem to prefer the recycling bins!

I'm no Voice of Experience - I've only had chickens for 2 months now & only one of five is laying (1st egg Thursday!).

I used two old wooden fruit crates that were stored in my converted garden shed coop.
Set them up on cinderblocks with some 2X4 ramps up to them and pine shavings inside.
I set a 3rd crate on its side between them as I read on here some hens like privacy.
I also "salted" each of the boxes with 2 fake wooden eggs I found at a crafts store.

My pullet who laid makes a hollow in the shavings and lays her egg right next to the fake ones.
Same box used for 3 days running now...
