nesting boxes

For nesting boxes, I use 5 gallon buckets 1/2 filled up with wood chips. Does anyone else do that?

So, do you just set them upright on the floor? Or are they mounted on their side to the wall? I have an temporary spot for my chickens while the coop is being built, and I need to get some boxes ready, they are nearing 16 weeks old. Any advice? Thanks in advance, and yes, I know we should have built the coop first, but I couldn't wait any longer, I HAD to have chickens!

On their side with a scrap of wood to keep them from rolling. LOL. I also have a 2x4 in front to keep some of the paper inside. The buckets are orange. See pix.

I have some commercial nest boxes from years ago that they seldom lay in. They prefer milk crates with hay. And one gal everyday lays in a five gallon bucket just sittin in the corner with hay in it! They are free range so every day is an easter egg hunt!
