i always thought chickens were supposed to each have their own nesting box. but lots of things say one nesting box for every 4 chickens. i find that amazing. i never have really looked it up. no chickens yet but i hope to soon have some. also do chickens smell? and what about bird flu? sorry, i'm kinda paranoid. thanks.

Yep, all literature that I've read says one nest box for every 4 chickens. They will all end up fighing over a few favorite nest anyway.

I have a flock of 15 pullets and they seem to favor only 3 nest and I have installed 7 in our coop. Oh yea! One of mine refuses to even use a nest box.
Go figure!

She always lays on the floor of the coop in the back corner in the pine shavings.

Before I had chickens I use to worry about bird flu, but nowthat I have them I'm too addicted to care!

No really, I just try to give them the proper requirements to keep them healthy and wash my hands. Well, I do snuggle and kiss them all the time......I'm doomed.

Chickens themselves do not smell at all. If you keep the coop clean there is no problem there either. They have to be some of the easiest pets ever. I have never had a problem with the bird flu, is it in your area?

They're like children apparently - mine line up to use the same nest box - they even line up when they DON'T want to lay - they all just don't like one having the box........

I just added a new nest box a week ago - a storage tote - plastic, and now they ALL lay in that... so much for my cute wooden boxes.....
