Hi, I am new to raising my very own chickens although I grew up with my family raising them before. I bought a few sweet chicks from a local feed store and was told they were vaccinated for mareks but after about 4 months I've lost several within last two months. The remaining ones don't seem to be doing well now either, it's horrible. One hen was recently euthanized and we're waiting for the autopsy. However the aviary vet and the lab thinks they had mareks symptoms. I called the owner of the feed store and they confirmed these chicks were send unvaccinated. I was then told only half of their shipment may have been vaccinated. I am upset to my losses and about not being mislead. Has anyone else purchased from a feed store in Escondido, CA on around first 2 weeks of March 2015 and is experiencing similar things?

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I'm sorry to hear you have lost some of your chickens :hugs
Mareks can be a terrible disease and I'm sorry you seem to have suffered this. Even with vaccination some chicks can still get this disease. It would have been nice for the feed store to have been more open with you about vaccination from the start. You could check out your state thread for other chicken keepers in your area. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you

Wishing you the very best of luck in the future :frow

Marek's survivors will be carriers for life. You may want to check out the "Marek's threads." just put that in the searchbox. Sorry for your losses, it's really a "Buyer beware," situation.
