Neurological episode - eye flashing (video) - any thoughts?

First time I can remember someone posting the treatment given for heavy metal poisoning, thank you for that. Interesting!
I think this is the thread that @Wyorp Rock was referring to:

Thanks for sending that thread over. Yikes...a nail! In Olive's case, the Dr said that the objects are small and not sharp and manual removal probably wouldn't be necessary. I just got the xrays of Olive from the hospital. It's the opaque objects that you see in her belly/gizzard and crop. They will check on the 20th be sure they are no longer present.

What's scary is that it's seemingly impossible to remove every foreign debris from their yard. My girls free range on our 1/3 acre backyard and they are always turning something up. So I'm constantly picking up every little piece of plastic, glass, nail, etc. I just hope that the next time one of them swallows something they aren't supposed to, they are able to pass it without any issues!

Hi Wyorp Rock. Yea, the Dr had seen some small pieces in her gizzard and crop in the xray. She said that it's not uncommon and most/many chickens will have no side effects from it and can pass it without issue. But since my girl was sick with the symptoms she had (neurological issues is one of the symptoms) that's why they suspected that is the cause.
While at the hospital they gave her a calcium EDTA injection which is a metal chelating drug. Then she's on another oral one for 60 days call DMSA that I'm administering.
It's interesting stuff. I guess it binds to metal ions and stabilizes it. Crazy science stuff!

She has a follow-up appt on Nov 20. They'll do another xray to make sure she's gotten rid of the metal objects.
So happy to hear she’s doing better. Thank you for the update and please it would be appreciated if you could do a final one when she’s back to normal, or even her new normal! She certainly does have a wonderful mama caring for her!

How did she react to the medication? I'm about to put my chicken on the same thing and so worried about her.

just for future reference , and I just posted this on someone elses thread about metal object in a bird,
you can try powdered laxative that DISSOLVES in water( does not gel up) . Walmart has one in their brand equate and Miralax does too , I believe.
A roller magnet would be good to run around the areas where your birds are, can be bought cheap enough at Harbor freight.

Hi mintyivyy1. I think she reacted well. At our 4-week follow-up no more metal pieces showed up in her Xrays. That was probably the meds and her just naturally passing it through her digestive system. She took the entire 6-week course of meds. So I assume it worked. And she didn't seem to have any specific side-effects. She was on a lot of mediation. I will say that the vets were concerned that she lost about 15% of her weight over the 4 weeks. Was interesting...they told me to stop feeding her fermented food. That was the only thing they could think of that could have caused the weight loss (anyhow that's more info than you wanted!).
