:aww
hope this doesn't deter you from getting your flock established.
try maybe day old chicks, and a little less heartache!

Thank you all for your posts...!
I live in a small town in Oregon. Nothing is close, lol. The ebay seller, I did leave him bad feedback but paid the price- he left me bad feedback too, when I would not help him file a claim with the post. Not even wrapping them he wanted to file....!
Texaspoultry.com is the site, and most the chicks were under $3 and some under $2. We did have to get the 25+ which was ok as the large amount is not why I bought eggs, I bought eggs so I would not have to ship live birds-
I have 30 chicks coming that are sultans, polish, frizzled and I am going to make my own frizzled polish, & sultans. And then we have 30 dark cornish (not the cornish cross) and 30 rhode island, so I can cross them myself and have a more natural version of cornish cross. We are just starting with our chicks, and crops (all organic rare seeds) and barbados black belly lambs (16 of them)
Thanks again for your posts!

Hi

I just started last year myself but here is what I found about eggs.

1. Check with the local Farm Service Office. They know your local farmers. I got 3 dozen eggs for my incubator at school. (sucess not yet determined)

2. Check with your local FFA or 4H. Again you can find local producers and clubs.

3. Check you local or county NRCS (natural resources conservation service) office...may times they "run" the local 4h registration.

4. Attend the local county fair....go the poulty barn as ask a few questions like
"What is the best breed of chicken?" The debate will start and you can find out who raises what and how. They will also try to convert you to their breed by offering advice, starter flocks and local EGGS.

Local is better.

Bill:)

The eggs that were wrapped were wrapped well, in bubble wrap.
I Also got some silkies from Texas poultry.
Unfortunatley in my area there is no one rasising the unique breeds I wanted. In my town we sell eggs and chicks, there is not to many others! Once the live chicks come in, we will incubate our own and not deal with eggs again. We have our own gunieas and Royal Palm turkeys too that have incubated with no problem...

Well good luck with your farming! We are trying to figure out what we want to raise. (other than chickens ) We purchase our meats & this summer we'll add veggies, from a local CSA. We're thinking about getting a couple of calves so we can raise them organically.

I tell you, chicken eggs are good, but turkey eggs are the bomb! Twice the size and twice as tasty. I love them!
The royal palm turkey are gorgeous, black and white...
