Never ever chicken mom

Eggs from your own birds are The BEST! I'm sure you'll agree when you get your chickens.

I started with four hens and all I knew was that a 4-H kid was selling them for $5 apiece. I'd never heard of BYC, and you have the opportunity to know so much more than I did when I started.

Welcome to BYC! I hope it helps you as much as it has helped me.

I’m trying to find out as much as I can before purchasing my chickens. I need advice as to breed, coop, feed, where to purchase my chickens. I only want 4-6 hens for eggs. I don’t intend on raising chicks.

If you want normal sized eggs, buy normal sized chickens. You can buy point of lay or chicks older then 6 weeks if you have a mild climate. They can go outside straight away too.

keep each other warm and with 6+ weeks and you can see what is a pullet and what is a cockerel with most breeds.

Don’t buy a prefab coop, and certainly not one under $ 500 if you want 4-6 chickens. A wooden shed conversion is a good option if you don’t want to build from scratch. Just add ventilation. Roost with poop trays and 2 nest boxes.

Make a large run of about 20m2 or more with hiding places. And look into needs against predators where you live.

In the article section there is lots of good info for starters. Tell us you’re plans if you figured out a few thing and you get lots of tips and comment you can follow up or ignore. 😄

Welcome! As someone already said, let us know what part of the country you live in for more targeted advice.

This time of year is a good time to get chickens. The days are getting longer and warmer, so that helps with maintenance (their water won't freeze, you don't have to worry about really cold nights and frostbite).

If you don't want to wait for your ladies to grow up, look for "point of lay" (POL) pullets. They will be more expensive than chicks, because someone else has fed and housed them for 4-5 months. Also, some breeds are real egg machines, and some are considered "dual purpose," for eggs and meat.

Good for you for doing your homework first! :thumbsup
