last week noticed two of the 7 week old chicks had a few bloody feather stumps. Gave them both a quick shot of blue wound spray - both screeched (thought it was maybe cold) and then were fine.
this weekend got to spend more day time with chicks, noticed the same two were a little worse off, and could see one of the chicks just casually nip a feather here and there and eat it. immediately fed yogurt for protein, went and got the wound spray, and gave a good soak to one. she screeched, and then scurried around crying, would reach back to her tail feathers and screech, run and cry some more, reach back to her tail feathers, screech.....I thought maybe she didn't like the sort of mentholated smell. It took about 5 minutes to settle down, but i did notice that the feather picking chick would act as if she was going to peck her and would stop - maybe the smell?
sprayed some on my arm where I have a new scratch, didn't feel anything. picked up the other chick who has a lot of bare skin on the back between the feathers and some bloody feather pins, and sprayed good. this chick became very very distraught, running and half crouching, crying, crouching and turning in a circle, etc. I think the spray was burning her skin - took her inside and ran water over her which seemed to calm her. Her skin looked all puffed up where it was stained blue, and not puffed up where the spray didn't hit.
felt absolutely terrible - this spray must sting like the dickens.
am going to try to order some hot pick.
any one else have this experience?
it isn't called blue kote, but "Blue Wound Spray" described as a penetrating antiseptic spray for cattle (?), has a little alcohol.
