had a thought of getting/having/keeping chickens and then.........a neighbor moved out and her chickens started jumping my fence and now I have 2 chickens (there were 4 but after I rounded them up into my fenced yard, that is when I found out they can jump the fence). IDK what happened to the other 2 but every morning when I get home from work, there the 2 are. I contacted the previous owner who said I could have them bc where she moved, they are not allowed. Bought a 50# bag of chicken food and just got them a chicken ?house?coop? to lay eggs in as they were laying them on my sidewalk! I don't know if chickens just lay eggs all willynilly but I figured they must like my yard if they are laying eggs in it????Anyway, I named them Helga and Gertrude and I found this site looking for what else to feed them bc just chicken feed seemed boring.
I've only had dogs (yorkies), grew up in town, never thought in 2 million years I'd like chickens but I'm growing fond of them so I'm happy to accommodate them and hopefully they will stay. I think one is a turken (looking at pictures), she has a bald neck, the other is dark, like blacks and darks browns, almost iridescent. Not sure who is laying eggs. Anyway, looking forward to being a member and learning from this site. Oh ya, my name is Lori and my yorkie is Teddy who stays away from the chickens bc he got pecked on the nose.

You can feed them table scraps in small amounts, and you might want to get a few more chickens, actually. It's usually good to have at least 3 in case one dies... especially if they're wandering around, you don't want them to feel unsafe either.

Never have I ever…moved and left my chickens behind because they weren’t permitted where I was going. What an odd thing to think is socially acceptable…Anyway…welcome to BYC! Chickens will generally lay eggs where they feel safe. So they must think the sidewalk is safe. They have very small brains so consider they are acting on instinct. Get a couple fake eggs and put them where you would like them to lay. Sometimes that works. Do you plan on getting a coop?

Hello Lori, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You will want to lock the chickens into the coop you bought them at night to keep them safe from predators. That may be what happened to the other 2. Just make sure you let them out as close to dawn as you can.
A complete balanced chicken feed plus what they forage around for in your yard is the best for them. Giving them treats causes imbalances and health issues.

Forgot to say: you can upload a photo of the black and brown chicken here if you would like help identifying it.
Ok, also learning how to navigate a "forum", not participated on one of these either. The black one only came at first but haven't seen it after a couple of days.

Hiya, Lori, and welcome to BYC! :frow

If you want to give them treats, scrambled eggs is a great one they love, is pretty healthy, and it doesn't take many for two chickens. You could split one between them.

Another idea to spice up their food is just put some in a dish and soak it. That mush, they'll love.

If you have a garden, or find it on sale in a store, ours sure love kale. That's packed with vitamins too.

We're glad you're here!
