I would akin a fertilized egg to a plant seed.
It's got the genetic material from both parents but doesn't grow into a plant (or chick) until exposed to the environment to make it grow and develop.
Maybe it sounds silly putting this way but that's what I tell my daughter who is now worried about eating a baby chicken when she eats one of our fertilized eggs.
