Hello all I would like to introduce myself. My name Julie, but my nickname is Jess. I received 4 baby chicks April 21st, I live inColorao. I have never raised chickens before. I hope my family and i are doing them right. We are raising them mainly for eggs.

1 Delware - BJ chick is the name She is the one who wants to be the first to know everrything, taste everything. She is the sweetest thing. I have to be careful, she like to peck shiny things, watches foil paper etc. She already got my eye twice.
1 Golden Lace Wynadott - Crisco is the name. She is built like a thug. I could hire her out for the chicken mafia. She does play well with others. Sweet working on socialization. Going great I can pet her, pick her up and she will calm down.
1 Americauna (probably Easter egger) - Omelete beautiful golden and rust feathers around her neck, and flufffy feather for cheeks. Laid back
1 Americanuna (probably Easter egger) Colonel Sandy - pettite, small feathher are a greyish blue, lavendar beautiful. She is the sweetest bird, sit in your let, doesn't mind you picking her up. At 3 days old she stopped eating or drinking. I fed he watered down gatorade, and scramble egg mixture. Put her back in the brooder. I did all I could do, said mother nature must run its course. Next day up and running with the best of them and acting like nothing has happened. She sings little peeps songs. Love to sleep in someone's lap.

I wanted to name one extra crispy and shake n bake but I was over ruled by the family.

We have a "redneck" double wide trailer/condo/apartment for them. We duct taped/gorillia taped 2 rather large rubbermaid totes together, cut at a hole so they can go between the two. They love it. They have room to roam, and it keep them from getting each other nerves. I guess the set up with the food water and space is working because we hardly ever hear a peep out of them. You will get close to the condo and you hear the little pepping noises. I use a chicken drinker that has a float in it. It is working out great now. It took a few tries, I finally took the extra drinker put a little oatmeal in the bottom so they could understand that the yellow float was for pecking. After that session I put the real thing in and it was not an issue anymore about getting water. It is so funny to see them line up in a line for a drink. The coop and the run are in renovations, goingto have 2 4-5 ft roosting poles for them, and a door that lead them to the outside run. I think have a doorway in the redneck condo will help them get the concept of going out a door and going in and not be scard/ BTW tried a corn cob, they all got scared of it and ran away. You thought I was hold the cob of death of something. lol.

I havve them on starter/grower food. No one told us how long to use the starter crumbles. I also place weeds(dandelions) from the yard, and greens(spinach, little cucumber) into a suet holder and hang from the midddle of the tub. It is a treat about 2-3 times a week. Gives them hours of fun, they have to work hard to get a weed, as it is swinging all the time. I have found that raw organic oatmeal is like chicken cocainee/herion to them.. I using as a small training treat. If Crisco allows me to pet and hold her she gets couple pieces of oatmeal from my hand. Oatmeal is a good training tool. I put a little scratch on the floor, and they are sratching around like chickens should. I taught them about worms, and moths (yum). Ok, the book did not tell me I had to show the chicks what to do with a worm. I cut them in small pieces and it worked like a charm.(yuck). All in all I think they are happy. They will not, no matter how much I coax, prod, sleep on a roost. They like to form a chickie mosh pit. Some morningss it look live an evil game of chicken twister has gone on/ Yet all their heads are out cuddling with each other. If I break them apart put them on the roost, in the morning I have a cuddling mosh pit of chickies. Decided if that is how they want to sleep at night and they are happy, I will leave them be to be chickens.

Welcome and congrats on getting your own flock.

Sounds like you have things under control. Love your intro.

My chicks also would not roost in the brooder, but they did use the roosts first night they spent in their real coop. Bet yours will as well. It is a natural instinct.

You should stick with starter feed until they are 18 weeks old or start laying. Most brands have the info on the feed sack or on their web sites to help with the transition.

My only concern is to warn against too many treats so they do eat mainly the compete starter. And to make sure you are giving them chick grit to be able to digest the extras. They don't need grit for the starter feed, but do for anything else.

Any new object you place in the brooder and later in the coop or run will give you the same "scared chicken" response until one gets brave enough to explore and peck and then they all join in. Mine have never liked scratch or corn at all ( but no one told them there's corn in their feed :)

Have fun, enjoy the early days, they grow so fast. Get loads of pics so you will be able to reminisce when they are older.

The chickens have plenty of grit, due to the treats. I try to kept it to a min, although it is hard as they are to darn cute. They like the weeds the best, I go outside and pick them, put it in a suet holder and hang it in the middle of the double wide condo. I took video of them going after the weeds, hilarious.

I am using a mixture of construction sand, finally ground pebbles and ground up organic not treated crushed wood pellets (like saw dust). Layered them in a 30 gallon trash can and shake well. This mixture is working well. We plan to use this in the coop also. I am finding the chickens like this as a floor covering. I scoop the poop(yeah) and sift back the rest, any moisture is pulled away from them and is scooped out, they have learned to take a bath in this mixture and love it. Plus they scratch to find the grit they need. Thank you for the information on the starter food.

BTW first time the girls decided to take a bath, I about fell out of my chair. They were on their back rolling around feet in the air kicking I thought thy were having a seizure lol. They taught themselves how to take a bath, and then look at me like I am nutty when I asked what are you doing.

Glad that you joined us at Backyard chickens. Have you visited the Learning Center, it's the best place to start a chicken education.
