i let my 7 week old chicks i hatched myself out into the main enclosure to mix with the older bantam orpington all was ok and after a hr or so i sat in there with them for a bit. ive a large fowl light sussex and a small bantam wynadotte cross hen that i hatched, both v gentle and quiet. one of the orpington had a go at the light sussex pecked her neck then her head. i was just thinking about interfering when the little cross hen that is at least 3 times smaller, flew at the orpington hen and had a right go at her!, the orpington ran off. i was gobsmacked never seen a hen defend another one esp such a little thing!. was really touching to see has anyone else witnessed anything like this x

My broodies for sure will fly to the defense of one of their chicks if they're being harassed, but that's to be expected. What's really sweet is when our black bantam cochin rooster Zee starts leading the babies around and showing them where food is. I've also seen my black sexlink hen--who has never been broody in her life--showing the younger chickens what to eat in the yard. She would pick a blade of grass and then just hold it in her beak until the babies took it from her.

aw thats lovely. chickens def have more about them that we give them credit for what a star for defending her shes, a big bird but v soft and was making crying type noises when she pecked her
