I'm with two 12 week old pullets since sept 6th. 2 days after I brought them home I noticed one is sneezing and has discharge. Since I am new at this I brought her to a vet for an antibiotic which has worked I think. She seems fine now. A week ago the other my other bird began looking sluggish and not eating as well so I spoke to vet that thought I should start her on the same antibiotic. I have and now she is looking back to normal also. She still has 5 more days for tx. This has been rough since I am just beginning and have little knowledge of what and how to handle situations such as this. My goal was to get 3 more pullets the week after I got the first 2. Obviously I was not able to. It is now little over a month that I have these 2 birds that I have grown to really like a lot. Since they are both doing better I want to still get 3 more pullets around the same age. I am in the process of getting a temporary coop and 3 birds possibly this weekend that will be in quarantine for a month. I have not done a deep cleaning on the main coop yet since one of my birds is still on the antibiotic. It was brand new when I first set it up. What would be the best way to clean it. The new birds won't be introduced for a month. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Respiratory disease is common in Chickens...Not all are going to kill the Birds...Respiratory makes them carriers for life ...Meaning it can't be cured so will be passed on to new Birds you bring in....Anibiotics only help with the symptoms , do not cure them....Unless you do a total bio hazard quarantine it will be spread....Without knowing what respiratory disease your dealing with?...Its a gamble...Stress brings out symptoms of what diseases they carry...

What Antibiotic did the Vet give you?

Has your vet made a specific diagnosis on what she has?

The most common respiratory diseases are Mycoplasma Gallisepticum and Infectious Bochitus. Not all respiratory diseases makes them carriers for life. Most Birds are Bochitus free after one year given right therapy conditions.

ILT is very common also and makes them carriers for life....

My vet prescribed doxycycline which seems to have helped. She did not draw blood or check discharge for testing. Listened to her lungs and checked her out basically. So no definitive diagnosis really. She did feel it is viral rather than bacterial.
