My neighbor recently gave me 2 Sebrights. Right now I have all of my chickens together in the same coop. Should I build something for my bantams to stay in? Is it ok to let them lay eggs together? I'm afraid that the big ones will step on and break the bantam eggs. None of my chickens will start laying until late October so I have a lil while before I need to make a decision.

I have bantams and big chickens together. Haven't ever had problems with them breaking eggs! If you were still worried about it, you could build the bantams some smaller nest boxes that the big chickens couldn't get into. But our just lay in The big nest boxes.

Oh they are beautiful! I have bantams in with my big girls and there is no problem. As a matter of fact I just introduced 3 new girls, a Cream Crested Legbar, a Cochin Bantam and a Japanese Bantam to the rest of my girls and everyone is happy. One of my Cochin Bantams actually bosses around my big girls. It's funny to watch her stand up to my great big Orpington. They all share the nest boxes too. They will be fine if you take your time and introduce them correctly.

Theres not much room to make more nesting boxes in this coop. I built it out of pallets. I originally had 8 chickens then got attacked by dogs and had to start over. Now I have 15 and 2 ducks. They can all fit in the coop but no room to add nesting boxes. I would really need some type of shed for them.

I don't have a whole lot but they are already with my others. It was Sunday morning when my neighbor walked over with a box. He told me it was an albino rattlesnake. So my immediate thought was how can I tell this nice man to get that thing the hell out nicely. Then he told me he was giving me these 2 chickens. He had 39 of different breeds but I liked those the most. Anyway, we put them in the pen right away to see what happened and they fit right in. They followed everyone in the coop that night and last night one of them was underneath the fluff of my buff orpington. So I guess they did alright.

Good thing is they are the same age as my new ones. they are only 4 days apart. We both ordered at the same time but I didn't order bantams.

That can make a big difference. And I find it a lot easier to integrate younger birds than full grown ones. The breeds you have also make a difference. Buff Orpington pullets are generally pretty easy going. I would keep an eye on them for a few days to make sure there are no problems and everyone is getting its share of food and water, but it sounds like things will be okay.

We have 4 buff orpingtons, 2 red stars, 1 patridge cochin, 1 white cochin, 1 jersey giant, 1 australorp, 1 white Plymouth rock, 1 barred Plymouth rock and 1 buff brahma rooster. He will a year old next month. He is the only one left from the dog attacks. He is also the picture I use on this account. We like variety. :D
