Hello, we are the Toone family. Steve, Leeann and Ben are the three left at home since the four older birds have flown the coop. We hope to have our new chicks in a couple of days. One of our older boys introduced us to the website and we have been looking at it for several weeks before joining. We plan on having five to six hens, depending on what they are as they get older. No roosters for us in town. We don't know the breeds yet. Long story but we are excited and anticipating the chicks coming to our home. We have two indoor cats and a GoldenDoodle who thinks he is a teenage boy too! We know (hope) he will do well with the chickens because he has already befriended our dwarf bunny we had for several years. We live in the Phoenix area and look forward to visiting with others in the area as we learn how to keep our chickens happy and healthy.

First off, go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum - so you can locate and post on your state thread. The people there can give you the best advice for chickens through your climate. Also you may find the breed you want locally and not have to ship.

The Learning Center is a great place to start a chicken education. Oh yes,

Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of great articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry...

Unfortunately, most dogs see chickens as a meal. Even the most friendly of dogs. There are tons of threads in the emergency section on dogs eating their chicks and killing their adult chickens. So be VERY careful with your dog, even though he is friends with the bunny.

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck in your new chicken adventure!

Glad you joined us!

Welcome to BYC! x2 on keeping the dog and chickens separate, my dog showed no signs of wanting to kill the chickens and one day he took out my whole flock. I would advise never to leave them together unsupervised. Good luck to you.

Thanks everyone! We will post pictures when our chicks get to our home.
