Every farmer I know is good at making something to fill a need. I bet, Blessedmamaof3, that you or your husband can create some kind of covered safe place for your girls when they free range -- maybe a shade cloth-covered "cabana" where the hens can run for cover, if needed.

I am lucky to have plenty of shade trees, which made me feel a little better yesterday when a mature bald eagle (a pair nests less than a mile away, near my friend's farm) glided over my yard. A beautiful, but frightening sight for a chicken owner!

You have an amazing flock, and your kids are going to learn so much from raising their own chickens. Congratulations, Abigail, on convincing Dad to let you get them.

I identified with you living in the middle of a soybean field. The farmer whose land surrounds me rotates between corn and soybeans.

I wasn't meaning feeding them soybeans. Callender Girl said they also live by soybeans so I was wondering if her chickens tried to eat the beans in the field or how she managed that. I wouldn't intentionally feed them the soybeans.

No worries. I just thought I'd clarify for others reading it too. I'm sure I didn't word my question correctly.

My chickens -- with the exception of one Easter Egger -- never cross the fence into the neighboring fields. Evie once ventured over there, was out all night and NEVER again went past the goat pen to get into the field. So, nope, no problem with soybeans for my girls.
