I'm a total newbie, but I've decided to take the plunge and start raising chickens. I live on a small island near Sitka, Alaska and am hoping to connect with others in SE Alaska to learn from them and share info. In the meantime, I've been pouring through the forums on this site these past few weeks and absolutely LOVE all the information on here. Thanks to everyone who contributes!

Right now I'm building my coop that I'm hoping will be adequate for 6 chickens. It's a 4' W x 7' L x 4.5' H that's attached to my workshop (the nesting boxes and feed/watering areas are actually built into the workshop wall and can be accessed from inside the workshop). Next will come a 3' x 11' covered run (for our rainy days).... and hopefully, most day's they be able to free-range.

One thing... I am worried about what they might do to my (un-fenced) garden

Looking forward to the experience... and the eggs!

PS: Pics will come once the building project is complete!

Welcome to BYC! I can tell you that your un fenced garden will be history in short order! LOL My girls denuded my garden in their first year. Not a blade of grass, not a weed to be seen. So be prepared.

You might like to check in with the Alaska thread and chat with others in your area. There are many Alaskans here on BYC....

Great to have you aboard and good luck with your new birds!

welcome to BYC ,Hi I'm in Willow AK. I have a flock of "Barn yard Mutts" they do well up hear an they can clear a garden area in a short time my advice is fence the garden area off ,but in the fall after harvest let them in there to fertilize an they will rototill the area for you .Good luck.

Hey there. I am a complete newbie too, so maybe we could learn together. While you can battle the cold, I am battling the heat.Good luck on your start.
