I will add my welcome from eastern NC.Hi everyone! Do you guys still do these intros?
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We got our first chickens early 2023 and have had 105 chickens in our home in that time. Literally in, as I brooded all but 8 (purchased as already laying hens) of them in my dining room.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I Now have only 26, due to a series of events.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Our first round of chicks were Freedom Ranger meat birds, I loved them and learned so much with those fast growing buggers. Currently I have 10 Buff Orpingtons, 5 Lavender Orpingtons, 2 Cream Legbars, 8 barnyard mix (all sired by the sweetest Bielefelder) and a Blue Cochin roo to rule the roost. We recently had to put down our Majestic Maran (Black Copper Maran × Barred Rock). I've only lost 6 chickens, 4 to unknown factors, 2 to some sort of predator (1 possibly to my dog). But my most devastating loss were my 2 precious Toulouse goslings.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I've loved all the stages of raising chickens so far! I have great appreciation for each life we get to nurture and their wonderful personalities. Seeing them run across the property when I call them is probably my favorite, they are the sweetest group I've met. Growing up with distant chickens
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I make most our food from scratch, but baking bread is my favorite. I love to crochet when I have the time, no matter how infrequent that is.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I'm a stay at home mom, I run most aspects of the farm. My husband builds my structures and only shakes his head when I decided to start incubating eggs for the first time in November in Indiana.
We are in North East Indiana. Probably not in your path at all! It's a beautiful state. I've included one picture before having to cull our Maran and the second is the calm with our Cochin taking over. We didn't realize how much angst he was causing until he was gone.I will add my welcome from eastern NC.
Any pictures?
If you don't mind sharing, what area/region of Indiana? My granddaughters live in Chicago so I have traversed (driven) your state many times.
Have fun!
Thank you! It was so tough finding them, it was a brutal sight.Hello and welcome to BYC!
So glad you decided to join us. So sorry for your losses, always hard on the heart.
Make yourself at home here!
We managed to do them in stages, but those 56 meat chickens were something else! 10+ weeks of chicks inside was a lot. Our meat chicken house build ended up delayed due to weather and family circumstances - so we did have 86 chickens in the house at one time and that was stressful!Salve (Latin for hello!) I am sorry about your losses, especially the goslings!
It is incredible you managed to brood 105 chickens in your dining room!![]()
It must have been awful!Thank you! It was so tough finding them, it was a brutal sight.
We drove through northern Indiana once, coming from Ohio on our way to Illinois. That was the year some states refused to allow anyone to drive through without PCR testing for Covid, or impose a 14 day quarantine. We had to revise our usual route. We are in North East Indiana. Probably not in your path at all! It's a beautiful state. I've included one picture before having to cull our Maran and the second is the calm with our Cochin taking over. We didn't realize how much angst he was causing until he was gone.
