Hello fellow Chicken Lovers,
I've had chickens for about 12 years now. We moved to a 4.5 acre ranch in Higuera Blanca, Mexico and planted an exotic fruit orchard. Not wanting to spray the trees and have an organic fruit forest, we opted for chickens for pest control. At first we had bantam chickens, but the hawks, owls, boas and opossums took their toll. So we moved to full sized chickens (a mish mash of breeds) fenced our property to keep out wayward dogs and seem to have solved that problem.
We have had up to 40 chickens but at this moment we are down to 9. Once again, varied breeds. Here in the jungle we get what we can find. At present I am incubating 15 more eggs to increase the flock for summer insects. We do have many here in the summer, so perfect timing for the little guys to do their thing.
We do love our chickens. My husband complains but he feeds them treats every night and they follow him all over the orchard. I secretly think he is a chicken person too, but doesn't want to admit it.
We live totally off grid and enjoy the lifestyle. We are both retired and love living in paradise. Our ranch is about 10 minutes from Punta de Mita and 45 from downtown Puerto Vallarta. So a great place to live and raise chickens.
I have been looking on this website for years. Most times when I post a question on my search engine this website comes up and I have gotten much GREAT advice, so I decided to join the group. Looking forward to many more years of raising chickens and enjoying all the sage advice from the group.
