I just recently got the chicken bug, and have been reading and talking to everybody who knows anything about chickens to help me out. I have been wanting to have a backyard coop for a few years, but never had the time or money. Anyway, I couldn't bring myself to buy the materials to build the coop, so I got the bright idea of tearing down part of the deck off the back of our house that was falling apart, pulled all the nails and screws, and built one. It is extremely heavy as all the wood was heavy deck wood, and I guess i shouldn't have built it in my garage because I have yet to figure out how to move it. But it turned out great, and you would never know the wood came from a deck.

I did get myself a few chickens though. My wife was only interested in blue egg laying chickens, and found some Americauna hens that should be laying in the next week or so from a local breeder, and I was really wanting a chicken that laid white eggs, so I picked up a couple Leghorn hens. I am still learning quite a bit, so be patient with me and I will hopefully learn all about these things pretty quickly.

Has the deck wood been treated with preservatives that might harm chickens?
