New and hoping to learn a lot!!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. The other BYC members have given you some great advice so I'll just say, please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Do you have any breed preference?

Thank you everyone for the warm welcoming. :) Michael, i was told a hybrid type such as red star or black/red sexlinks would be good for our climate as well as productive egg layers. To be honest I am not even sure how or where to seek out that certain chick or pullet.. any advice?

You're welcome. Both Black Sex Links (Black Stars) and Red Sex Links (Red Stars) are very cold hardy. I've raised both hybrids for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids) and the sex links have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. I especially like the Black Sex Links (my favorite chickens) as they have been friendlier than my Reds, and have laid slightly better in really cold winter weather. Every major hatchery breeds and sells both Black and Red Sex Links so they are readily available. Black Sex Links are also sold under the label Black Star and rarely, Bovans Nera or Black Rock. Red Sex Links are sold under a number of labels including Red Star, Brown Sex Link, Gold Star, Gold Sex Link, Cinnamon Queen, Bovans Brown, Golden Buff, Golden Comet, Hubbard Golden Comet, Isa Brown, Shaver Brown, Babcock Brown, Warrens, HyLines, Gold Lines, Lohmans, Lohmans Brown, Brown Shaver, Red Shaver, Bovans Goldline, etc.
