Looking to get into chickens, never done this. Well, I am Don I live in Murfreesboro, TN currently. I am married (over 16 yrs), I also have 3 kids almost all teens. I love Photography, Music, and Lizards. I am also looking to become a Realtor and I am currently working in retail. I am trying to start my homestead, seeking property in TN and/or Texas. My question to you is what are the top 10 items to buy before I get my chickens? Also, what are your favorite breeds of Chickens?

Hi Don and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us.

I'd say start with building a coop (considerably larger than you initially intend) and a run. This link is great - http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-much-room-do-chickens-need

That's about all my mind can come up with at the moment - its a litttle early in the day :)

As for breeds - you'll get a whole range of answers. It depends on what you want to keep chickens for - eggs, a range of coloured eggs, meat, dual purpose etc.

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

My favourite breeds would have to be Hyline-Brown & Silkie.

The basic things you need before you get chooks are:
Pine shavings/Bedding material
Feeders/Drinkers
A chicken coop
Chicken fencing (depending if you want to free range or not)
Chicken Feed (Make sure you get the right kind for the age group, Chick Starter 1-7 weeks, Chick Grower 7-20, then from there you can just feed them a layer feed.

Hello and welcome to BYC!! It’s so nice to have you join us! welcome.gif

I have Ameracauna/Easter Eggers, Silkies, Old English Game Bantams, Cuckoo Marans, Barred Rocks, Icelandic and Black Copper Marans infusion with combinations of all the above. Overall they're quite similar. The Old English Game Bantams are more tenacious with other chickens, but more personably with people.

It can depend a lot on the breeder/hatchery is breeding for and what they deem important.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask one of us. :)

Hi Don, it's nice to have you here with us! Pork Pie Ken has given you some excellent places to start...just do your homework and decide on what you want from raising chickens and you'll do fine.

Make yourself at home here and always feel free to ask questions!
