New and in need of information

Of that list, I'd choose the Austrolorp, the RIR, and the Delaware or the Leghorn~in that order. If you can't find hens, put the word out that you are looking and it wouldn't hurt to advertise in your local listings. Buy hens at the 5-6 mo. age so you can get them when they are reaching sexual maturity and will produce for you longer. After 2 years their peak egg laying may, not always, but may taper off.

from southern California. You are going to LOVE this forum! Heres my 2 cents worth of experiences. Prowl BYC for breeders, people selling birds or rehoming birds, in your area. Find a thread from your area [or start one yourself] and say I am looking for some hens. Craigslist is another good place to look.

Learn "chicken math" now.

Simply put, it is; if you only want 3 hens now make your coop big enough to hold 6, cuz you WILL be getting more

Leghorns are noisy birds so be careful about that if you want a quiet chicken.

When you do go to oogle over a prospective hen/s check out how she is living and if the other birds look healthy. If at all possible get 2-3 hens from the same place so you don't have to quarantene them from each other.

Check out the LORE section here on BYC to see if there are any ordinaces/laws that might affect where you live and owning chickens.

I am finding that chickens make the COOLEST PETS on the planet!
They are cheep to keep and you get SO MUCH in return from them..poop / eggs & love [in that order]

WELCOME!!!

Hawks seem to bother my birds most in the dawn and dusk hours. They will during the day at times however. Fox and raccoons can dig. Mostly doing so at night so be aware of that with the tractor.
