Hi everyone! I'm Mary from northern California and I'm new to raising chickens. I've been doing a lot of reading and am thankful to have found this site (thank you Google!). I’ll do my best to cover the 6 intro topics that were outlined.

I've ordered 10 German Bielefelder chicks that will be here the first week of April. Nine girls and one boy. I hope to add Black Copper Maran in the future. I'm not sure if I will keep all the GB hens but we're setting up to house them all.

I was a hot and warm glass artist for over thirty years, as well as working in metals and stone. A little over a year ago we lost our home, my store, and my studio in a wildfire (actually a ‘controlled’ burn) that destroyed a total of 23 homes. So, instead of starting a new chapter in my life I’m looking at it as writing a whole new book. I am thinking I will try my hand at woodturning (always wanted to work with wood) and chickens to start. I always wanted to raise chickens too! One door closes, another opens….

I never met a tool or piece of equipment I didn’t covet and I’m game to try nearly any creative or artistic endeavor. I enjoy baking, cooking, and gardening and taking photographs. We have two dogs, the quirkiest English chocolate lab girl ever, and a big beautiful Rottie goofball that allows himself to be pushed around by the lab who is half his size.

I will probably have many questions to post and hopefully experiences to share as my flock grows.
