Hello everyone! My name is Meg. I'm looking into getting into raising my own chickens. I've been reading up on all kinds of information and have decided that I'd like to start out by having a house chicken for a pet, but I'd love to get advice from others about it, as well as help with choosing a breed and making my home chicken ready and safe. Thanks for reading!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I'm afraid I've never kept house chickens sorry but here is a link for a house chicken thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/299187/people-with-house-chickens
I'm sure other members there will be able to help you with all your house chicken questions.

Good luck with your new chicken journey. Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

glad you have joined us.

Having a house chicken could be loads of fun. Do explore the mentioned forum. I would also suggest you search the forums for house chickens and specific questions you have about raising one in the house, there are many discussions on the subject. I don't remember what thread, but some folks have been successful training them to use a cat box, IMO that would be priceless.

But one thing to consider would be whether this is a permanent house chicken or not. IMO raising one in the house and later placing the same one in a coop might be quite stressful.

Good luck with your decision.

Thank you sunflour! I'm definitely planning on a permanent house chicken, and thanks for the extra advice!

Welcome to BYC. My friend has had one or more (at a time) housechickens for over 25 years. Cochins, buff orps, mixed, silkies and seramas. Currently she has 3 silkies and 2 seramas in the home. She doesn't diaper them but, cleans up after them - on the spot, when she is home. They fight to sit on a chair and watch tv with her. They and the dog wait by the front door for her to return from errands then they mob her for attention.

Seramas especially were bred in Malaysia to be house pets. They take confinement well and are one of the smallest chickens breeds - generally under 1.5 lbs. Do subscribe to the people with house chickens to get more ideas etc. Lots of people are not zoned for chickens but, can still have them this way. To the average person they seem more like some kind of parrot or other cage bird. The silkies seem fine in the house also and look like some exotic foo foo dog to people., people never think they are chickens.
