Hello all!

I would like to introduce myself and share a little as to why I joined the site. My father has always been fond of keeping chickens and I have raised many with him when I was much younger. We stopped raising chickens when i was about 10. After I moved out he got back into chickens and owns a bunch now.

I have been out in the world doing my thing for the last 9 years and have not owned or raised chicks or chickens since. My wife recently brought up the interest in keeping chickens because she recently read that we can legally keep up to 6 in town.

Building a coop will be nothing for me. If we go through with this I was thinking a simple long A frame with wheels to make it easy to move. I understand it will need about half shielded from wind and along the top I'll have the nesting boxes with a ramp going up to it.

So now I want to look into getting some chicks. I have NO clue as to what any of the breeds are called and what are and are not good for laying eggs. The basic intent of these would be for fresh egg supply through the year and maybe cull 1 or 2 a year for special dinners. My wife likes the looks of those chickens that have the tuffs of feathers around their feet that remind her of bell bottom pants. What names am I looking for with that limited description or should I be looking at something else for good laying hens?

Thank you all for any help and advice.

I'm not personally familiar with the feather footed breeds but check out some of the hatchery web sites, you'll be able to see pictures and descriptions of breeds and recommendation's according to what you are looking for. Should be able to pick out some feather footed ones that way. My Pet Chicken is one that will ship small orders if you think you might like to go that route.

Best of luck, have fun with your new hobby!

! Pleased to have you in our community! Research is half in the fun in chickens - so many fun and unusual breeds to consider! Below is a chart that describes lots of breeds and compares their attributes. Might make you choices easier (or harder!). Good luck to you!

Thank you all for the suggestions. All I need now is a new hobby with lots of research lol. I am an avid snake breeder with years if research and experience and am a few years into researching an practicing home brewing. This should be a fun one to add to the list.
