(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I got my ducks and geese babies as a Mother’s Day gift 2025. That started my journey. I got my buttons September 2025 and Coturnix October 2025.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
8 ducks, 2 geese, 7 Coturnix and 10 buttons with two new hatchlings.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Coturnix, Buttons, Perkin, Muscovy’s, Afcrian Gray geese, and Canga.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I’ve always wanted ducks and geese since I was a child. While my dad was in Vietnam our neighbor had a farm. But being an Army brat and military wife I never could till now. I love watching and listening to them. Originally I got buttons to put in bottom of my finch Avery. I went to pick up 4 more females. When I drive an hour only to find out they were Coturnix. I was like why not give it a try. I know the eggs are a good source of protein which my Dr says I need more of. Started doing research and learning. Found out they were a great meat source as well. We eat the eggs and duck eggs. So I was like why not feed my family quail meat as well.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Like I mentioned I have ducks and geese. Plus in my home I have a bird room. I have zebra and red face finches. My zebra have successfully hatched two sets of babies. I have parakeets (which I’ll breed this coming spring. I also have 3 cockatiels. I let the parakeets and cockatiels free fky in the room during the day. My family calls me the pigeon lady from Home alone. I love to read. Not much of a tv watcher and love fixing up our new property. I do a lot of DIY. 1st cheaper to make than buy and 2nd lots more fun using my creativity. Love plants and learning to garden.
