Hello everyone! I'm new here and don't know much. We have 4 leghorn white chicks and 2 amercaunas. And also two ducklings. If anyone has any advice it will be gladly appreciated :)

Welcome to BYC. Go to the 'Raising Backyard Chickens' forum and click on the "Coop and Run design, etc" section. Good luck in your construction.

Ahh i love the blue egg layers! I am new to chickens as well. And just had the hubby build me a cooo recently. There has been many changes to it as we went along and learned as time went on. Ive come to realize what works best for me and my girls. I have a 5x8 coop. With a wire/ mesh bottom. And have river rock and sand as the floor to help with draining any water from rain. It works very well to keep my hens dry and they can scratch through the sand and take dust baths. They love it.also makes it like a big kitty litter box to clean. Pretty easily. I have an "X" shaped roost. And two removable nesting boxes to easily remove eggs. My coop seems to be very different than others ive seen. But when you are on a budget you cant have all the fancy stuff. The whole front of my coop opens up like two french doors. So the chickens can go in and out as they please. Also keeps a lot of air flow in there. And i can always see whats goin on in there and can easily get in there to collect eggs. My chickens are free ranged though. So to keep predators out i have chicken wire fencing all the eay around the coop. With one portion of the fencing raised at the bottom to let the chickens in and out but not predators. Its a hidden doorway in between two trees. My dog cant even figure it out. So if any harm comes to the chickens they can just run right in the fencing to safety. :-) hope this somewhat helps. Im sure others have good advice and there experiences to share with you.
