Guess I am low in the pecking order.

On Tuesday I was at a doctor’s appointment with my grandson and I was reading the April 2003 issue of Sunset magazine. I found an article “The Skeptic’s Guide to the City Chicken” and I became very interested in the chicken coop article. Well this led me to wanting to have chickens again only this time I wanted to follow through with it.

When I got home I looked up the information I found in the article and ended up on Backyardchickens.com. I was looking for a chicken that would be; (1) good in the Mesa heat, (2) friendly and good with children, (3) good layer, (4) a pretty bird, and (5) locally available. Then I came across the article and blog on Aloha chickens and was very excited about what they had done and the color of the bird.

I have to first build or buy a coop. The breed is of concern for this purchase or build based on the size. I wanted to have for hens and to get them as young as possible but was not interested in hatching unless that is the best option. I have time so if chicks would not be available for a few months that is fine, especially if I choose to build my coop.

I was hoping to see your Aloha’s or the breeder you reference in your blog who is in East Mesa. I live at Apache Manor located on the Northwest corner of Main and Ellsworth. So who ever is closer would be great. I also have no idea what kind of money each chick would cost. Any recommendations on; (1) coups, (2) feed stores, and (3) veterinarians’, would be appreciated.
Thank you for taking time to read my post. They have created an impressive breed.

I have heard of Aloha chickens but, never researched it. I assumed they were in Hawaii. None the less I put "Aloha chickens," in the search box and several hits came up.

If you do the same you should find threads you can subscribe to and in that way get info on who has them, etc.

Howdy. The lady that is creating the breed spent some time in Hawaii and likens the mottled colors to an aloha shirt.

Thank you. Do you have any suggestions on breeds that can stand mutiple days of 100 degree temps.
