New Arrivals- 6 Week Old Wyandotte’s. Pullet’s or Roo’s? Also they are SO skittish help!

I'm no expert by any means, but I thought I'd mention that we have a Wyandotte and she is by far, the most skittish of our flock of four. Always has been and we got all four at 1-2 days old and handled all of them a lot! She's beautiful but very shy around the humans. Our Barred Rock is the most loveable.

Funny you say that because we also have a Barred rock and she is the most sweetest, calmest and just super chill chick out of all of the ones we have. She lets anyone pick her up and just hangs out. I thought it was because when she was just days old, she literally was knocking on deaths door (which I was not about to let happen) and luckily I was able to save her. So I figured she was just super sweet to me because she knew I had brought her back to life. Wishful thinking ;) I have heard countless of times that Barred rocks are just the best all around and so sweet so there’s probably no coincidence. But I’ve also heard that Wyandottes are also super friendly and super sweet so I find it surprising to hear that your Wyandotte is still super skittish. I hope ours don’t stay this way... time will tell though :hmm

They seem a little more relaxed this evening. Not all scrunched up in the corner together like they were before!:love

First of all I know absolutely nothing about this breed, but I do see distinct diffrences in their beak structure from your initial post.

The faces look totally diffrent to my "Untrained eye" I would bet one of each.

Behaviorly from your photos the foreground wider beaked one seems to be protecting the skinnier beaked one that just says roo to me.

I do see some very small differences in their features but they are also different sizes- one is a bit larger then the other so I’m not sure if that’s plays a roll in how developed they are.
I have also noticed the smaller one (the silver laced) seems to be trying to hide behind the other one but they both were trying to hide behind their siblings when we went to pick them out earlier today. So I’ll have to keep an eye on that.
Thank you for pointing those out- something I’ll continue to watch over as they grow.

Trust me I am no expert but in 5 out of your 8 photos he is watching you like a roo, and she is trying not to be noticed. Combine that with the structural diffrences in their beaks and I think you might have your first clue as to their sex.

I am only a sexing novice(expert at 3.5 months) in my own breed at 2-3 months. But you either have a very roo like hen in my opinion(which is worth squat) or a roo.

Sorry, I am not familiar with Wyandottes at all but if I had to make a call, I am leaning towards cockerel on the red.

But, again, definitely not an expert and I do not trust my judgement so you probably should not either :p ;)

I am really hoping the red is not a cockerel :( I do see what some of you are talking about... I’m just hoping she’s more of a confident girl:fl. I may try the DNA sexing through Animal Genetics to find out. I’m going to try it on one of my silkies that I am unsure about so I might as well try it on the red laced. But i’ll wait a few more weeks before I torture it by plucking its feathers.

Hi everyone! Just wanted to give an update with some photos of the Wyandotte’s we had gotten a few weeks back. They are now 8 weeks and starting to change a bit. They have come a long way (still skittish at times) but not nearly as bad as when we first brought them home. It’s been quite an adjustment with our original 6 that we had... they still aren’t too fond of the 2 new ones and pecking at them still occurs but I’ve been integrating them in slowly. Anywho, I’m still not sure the sex of the wyandotte’s... the silver laced still looks hen to me but the red laced has been a guessing game. With updated photos what does everyone think???? The shape of the comb on the red looks a little different then the silver.
