Just stumbled upon this web site and decided to join. We have 5 laying hens and 2 roos as of now, will be getting new babies in Feb. So, its about time that I really start learning about my flock.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. I would suggest either removing one of the roosters or doubling the number of hens as the recommended ration of roosters to hens is 1 rooster for every 10 hens. As they mature, too many roosters will become very hard physically on your hens; over-breeding them, biting and plucking the feathers from their necks and backs, battering them, and potentially, seriously injuring them. The only reason you really need a rooster is to fertilize eggs for hatching, and 1 rooster can easily handle 10 hens in this regard. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chickens do you have?

Welcome to BYC!

Good luck with your flock! What breeds do you have right now, and what type of chicks are you thinking about getting?

I'm glad you joined us!

I would be sure to check out the Learning Center: Learning Center Articles. Mountain Peeps gave you some good links, too.
Good luck with your current flock and future chicks!
