Hello - My family and I just moved from congested NJ to 10 acres of nature in PA. We rescued a dyed chick at Easter time from my daughter's friend right before we moved which got us started. My husband has built a wonderful and large coop and in early July, I purchased a "6 pack" of chicks from the local flea market. Our Rooster Herman and the chicks now share the coop, although Herman is the only one large enough to free range during the day. I'm excited and looking forward to many happy adventures in chicken raising, although I don't make a very good farmer in that I love them all already! I actually feel bad eating chicken for kinner now LOL.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Just be careful that you don't end up with an excess of roosters. The recommended ratio of roosters to hens is 1 rooster for every 10 hens. As they mature and their hormones kick in, too many roosters will become very hard physically on your hens; over-breeding them, biting and plucking the feathers from their necks and backs, battering them, and potentially, seriously injuring them. The only reason you really need a rooster is to fertilize eggs for hatching a 1 rooster can easily handle 10-15 hens in this regard. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Chickens sometimes eat their flock mates, so I wouldn't feel guilty about having one for dinner. Some people offer them turkey carcasses after the holidays and they pick the bones cream. On BYC people often joke (???) that if they fell down in the run, the chickens would probably devour them. OOps sorry, should keep those "old chickener tales," to myself.

Welcome to Backyard chickens.
