New Australian Hatching Mystery Egg at Home

Ahh the area of Queensland. For the uninformed, QLD is a state that is 1,852,642 km sq. Texas is a mere 696,200 km sq. The entire state has the population of the Boston-Cambridge metro area.

Oh and their rugby league team sucks.

Guess which state I am from? LOL

One of the wonders of BYC is that because of its world wide popularity, time zones can be an advantage.

I PM’d Sumi, a moderator and experienced advisor to come on by when she gets a chance.

Sumi is a Springbok expat living in the land of St Patrick. She is going to let me stay in her castle if I smuggle her some White Faced Black Spanish Chicken eggs – but they have to be show quality.

I'm in the Queensland area, so it's only 5:30pm here right now. How are your pipped eggs doing?

I've decided to collect the materials in case I need to assist, but I'd rather hold off until really necessary. It sounds like it's doing good in the experience of others, so that's enough for me. Thank you so much :')
I am getting there. I have 5 swedish flower hen chicks that are cute as heck. 6 Salmon Faverolles out with two chirping in the eggs, I have what was labelled a buff brahma but no leg feathers but looks buff and another labeled buff but is dark feathered. That poor guy has deformed feet - no rear toes so i will give it a few days to see if it can work out how to stand up. It came from the bator that was unplugged for 5 hrs or more on day 7. still waiting for the rest of the chicks in that bator to do anything. one ext pipped 12 hrs ago.

Good morning everyone

I haven't read through the whole thread, someone asked me to check in quick.

It looks like it may be a duck, so I'll take this as a duckling hatch. Like chicks ducklings pip externally before they absorb the major blood vessels in the membrane and the yolk sac. You can candle and check to see what's going on in there. I see you have a nice light coloured egg, so it makes thing a lot easier! Candle and look just below the line of the air sac for blood vessels and just below the lowest point of the air sac line for the yolk sac. It looks like a dense mass. As the yolk sac gets absorbed you should be able to see a "void" appear. They need ± 24 hours to complete this absorption process, but it could be longer. (Oz, you say it's been 13 hours since external pip?) I'd suggest wait and candle again every 3-4 hours and check on it's progress. If you can post candling pics so we can have a look too that will be great. Once the yolk has been absorbed and the blood vessels retracted it can take the duckling another 7-8 hours to zip and complete the hatch.

What you can do in the meantime is open the pip hole just enough so the duckling (if that's what it is) can breathe easy.

Nice summary of Queensland Oz! :p I hope you have a good night, and your little hatchlings all sound really cute so far! I hope that your ones in the bator that had the shut down time all make it too. Crossing my fingers for them!

Australian Bustards are really super cute and cool, and would be oddly suitable for my family, but I've never seen them wild around this area unfortunately.

CluckCluckLuke, at this point I don't know if this little baby will be hatching out this evening or perhaps during the night. I'm going to be up with worry and constantly checking if it isn't out by the time I need to sleep. I hope you'll be able to be around for it when it does hatch though! If not, I'll be sure to post as much as I can because I really hope to be awake and maybe film it hatching!
