We had a broody hen who changed her mind after sitting for a few days, so we grabbed her eggs and put them in the incubator. Last night the last one hatched.

We have the following in our flock:
Alpha roo - SLW
Roo - RIR

Hens:
SLW
RIR
BO
BR

Baby 1:

Solid black - we assume this is a girl from our SLW roo and a BR hen (we’ve hatched one of these before)

We are pretty sure this little one is from SLW roo & BO hen. It looks like another we hatched, who is currently a 4 mo old cockerel who has lost his mind. (He is mostly white and black with gold here and there.) However , this one could be from our RIR roo too?? And maybe a girl??? (Fingers crossed!!). No idea if this combo would give any indication of gender!

Seems pretty clearly all SLW, and probably a girl?

Another pretty obvious SLW, maybe a boy? (Our alpha roo had lighter down than the girls - except for one - when they were chicks)

Yet another SLW girl? My sister said this one looks like a calico cat! 😂

We’ve only been at this for 2 years, so we are always eager to learn.

Any ideas?

Too early for sex, but I don't think your RIR had anything to do with these
We didn’t figure we’d be able to sex yet, but we weren’t sure if any other combos besides the SLW/BR would be sex linked.

And is is very likely they’re all from our alpha roo. He’s a rather Randy fellow. 😂

Your guesses sound pretty accurate to me. And the only thing I could contribute to the gender would be with that first one being a girl with a BR mom like you said. I’m planning on hatching some babies in the spring too and I was wondering if you could post a pick of your older SLWxBO because I’m curious about how much of the lacing comes through with only one laced parent. Your babies are so cute btw 🥰🥰🥰

Thank you!

I’ll dig around and see if I have any pics of Smidgen (the older one) as an adult. Unfortunately, she was a dog attack victim. Or coyotes - we aren’t sure. (Between that and the hawks this year, it has been rough!) But I can tell you that she was solid black with some iridescence (like a female Cayuga duck). She didn’t have any lacing at all. She was gorgeous and very sweet.

Baby update:
We think we have four girls and a boy!
One of the SLW babies has a redder comb and less tail feather development. Also he looks and act JUST like his daddy: very rooster-y! LOL! As such, we have dubbed him Junior.

Not the greatest pic, but they’re so hard to photograph!

The next one had me worried, but I’m pretty sure she’s a pullet. Her mama is one of my sweet BOs, and her daddy is our SLW roo. Is it wishful thinking on my part that she’s a girl? She’s the most feathered and the biggest. (We have a cockerel from a previous hatch who’s the same cross, and he was way less feathered out at this age with a big comb, so that’s what we’re basing our opinion on.) interestingly, the cockerel has a single comb, and this one has a rose. Do y’all think this one’s a pullet?

Then there’s the two I thought were 100 SLW. Now I’m not so sure they’re not SLW and BR. The catch is that I think that their daddy might be our SLW/BR cockerel. Had they been SLW and BR, they’d be solid black like our other chick. But they were chipmunk babies. Now that they’re a bit bigger, their single combs are obvious (I know, not unheard of with SLW, but none of our hens do, and neither does our SLW roo.). Also, one of them seems to have white bars at the tips of most of her feathers rather than lacing. She almost looks speckled! The other looks more laced, but she still doesn’t look like our other SLW chicks did when feathering out. I keep referring to them both as “she” because they look like pullets to me. What do y’all think?
The more speckled one is in the middle.

The pic below is from last week, so less feathering, but it’s easier to see them. (Junior is on the left, standing on the heater.)

All the babies act like girls except for Junior.
I wish I had better pics, but they’re not cooperative!
Below is everyone in the yard this afternoon, hangin’ with the ducks.

Any input is appreciated. 😃

It just something I read but I believe pullets feather out faster then cockerels at least from the same breed so I think your right on Junior being a young too.
