THEY HAVE GOTTEN QUITE AND MOST ARE SLEEPING. MAYBE THE REST OF THE GIRLS ARE GOING TO BE OKAY. THERE IS ONE CHICK THEY JUST PUT IN I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS. (LITE GRAY WITH BLACK STRIPES RUNNING DOWN IT'S BACK) DOES ANYBODY RECOGNIZE THAT?

It looks like you're already getting some good advice about your new chicks. Check in the "Raising Baby Chicks " area of the forum for more information, too.

Post pics of your chicks if you can!

(By the way... You seem like a super-nice and awesome person, so I'll just give you a hint...typing in all caps on the Internet is the same as screaming.

Just wanted to help you out in case you didn't know).

I got great advice from everyone.Today we have 15 babies.
They seem to be doing great. We lost 12. How long is it before you know they are going to be okay? How hard is to add new chicks to a flock? I thought about adding four more in a couple of weeks. McMurrays advised to go ahead and get them this weekend to add to this batch. I just don't think I could take the stress of that. carolina grils

That's really too bad. I bought some last October. I lost 7 total. I ended up with 20. Since then I invested in an incubator and that is much better. You can find just about any breed here on the byc forum. The sellers are real nice and do a fantastic job packing and selling. It's great fun watching them hatch. I wish now that I had went with the incubator first instead of buying chicks through the mail. But then you have to make sure you buy eggs in good weather. Too cold they wont develop. Too hot and I would suppose it would cook them or start the incubation. Not real sure about the hot weather as I live in Maine. I did buy some eggs in the coldest month and only 3 of the 12 made it. I only ended up with 4 that was viable. One died just before the hatch. I have 3 little chicks. I think the next batch are due to hatch on Tuesday. I have 10 in the incubator from another seller. Started with 13 and dropped 3. They all have viable embryos. You can look around on the board. Some of the members show how to make a homemade incubator. I hope the rest of your chicks make it.
