Ducks and alligators do not make good neighbors. We have a canal that crosses our dry land right before the levee and it is full of gators in fact I hope I can get a couple of alligator tags this year. But not too far from the canal we have a pond, actually a borrow pit where a previous owner sold fill dirt for building the highway that crosses the front of the property next to the bayou. The fill pit or pond would be good but have a lot of brush to clear around it before letting ducks in there. Too much cover for predators. Wife doesn't want them up close to the house. She doesn't like duck poop everywhere and they bit her on her hiney when she was a little girl so that goes double for geese. She doesn't mind chickens or turkeys or quail or pheasants. She thinks she would like guineas but she hasn't been around them enough to know how noisy they are. But no quackers. Out of the question. Oh and at the front of the property, on the bayou, more gators. All the way in the back, beyond the levee, 24 acres of open marsh and you guessed it, more gators. We do get wild ducks back in our marsh and flying over and I take a shot at them when I can. I wouldn't mind trying quail in the future and she kinda wants us to start a couple of turkeys in time for the holidays this year. She also wants rabbits but we have a lot of wild ones and there are disease concerns.Hiya, and welcome to BYC!
It sounds like you've got a great place there for ducks! Have you considered getting any?
