:clapOver the weekend, I bought 6 Moderns from a man out of state, and he shipped them Monday! Early this morning, we got a call from the post office and I was out of the house driving within minutes. I got them home, and sat them in the house, and went to plug in the heat lamps I installed last night. They all made the trip well! A little hungry and cold, but overall good! I’ll take some pictures of the birds in a week or so after they’ve settled in. My biggest worry is the heat lamps won’t keep them from getting too cold/sick, as they came from the south and aren’t used to the frigid temperatures Illinois has right now. Fingers crossed they don’t get sick! :fl
Last night I tried to make the pens as cold-proof as possible. They look small in the picture, but they are deep, and are bigger than they look. I took some plastic tarp (It won’t catch fire, made sure to get some that specified this) covered the back, and used another piece to cover the entire top, except about 2 inches on the front for air flow. Then, I took a thin, old comforter and attached it so it would fold over the front, and could easily flip out of the way when I did chores. The comforter is there for 3 reasons, to keep them warmer, to relax them, keep them secluded after traveling stress, and to prevent them from seeing the other chickens across from them, so they wouldn’t stress about them. Finally, there’s some bedding/sawdust in the bottom! (Does anyone have problems with their chickens eating the bedding/sawdust? Is this bad for them to do?)

Use wood shavings not saw dust. Saw dust will cause an impacted crop. Not a good thing. Also, you are going to cook those thickens with those heat lamps. Just get 60 watt standard bulbs in them lamps.

Wood shavings, that’s the word I was looking for! I’m not sure what The heat lamps are, I’ll check when I get home, but they are the same lamps I’ve used on chickens in the past. If they are over 60, I’ll look into changing them for a lower Watt. Thanks!
