Hey BYC. I’m trying to see what, if anything, can I do to help new born baby chic to survive.

Today, when we went to the barn to do our daily routine of checking, cleaning, etc., we found a new born chic under our spectacled Sussex (“Spectacles/Specs”). Specs has been in her nesting box for over 3 wks. We removed some eggs (about 9 or 10) on May 28th/29th because there were just too many in the box. We left about 7 or 8 and labeled them in case other eggs were deposited. After seeing it with our own eyes, we realized the other girls were also laying eggs in the same box. Somehow, the other girls were squeezing their fluffy butts in the nest. There are 6 nesting boxes for 16 girls. I couldn’t believe she would allow it, but she did. Anyhoo, when we did today’s check, we found a new born (maybe hours old) in the nest but she did not have it under her. Looking more closely, we saw that it was injured. Someone had pecked it. Not knowing what else to do, we removed it and placed it in the indoor brooder.

I’m hoping for some advice to help the little to survive, if possible.

Appreciative,
Lillian
