I typically use the small dog kennel while I have them in the house a few days and then move them to the patio in the dane sized kennel.
A couple of years ago, I found this daycare style crib while volunteering for a dog adoption group yard sale. I thought, hey, this would make a great chick brooder.
The plan was to use it in the new coop and brood them out in the coop and the big birds could see, but not get to them.
Yeah, doesn't fit through my skinny door lol
So I pulled it out of the garage where it has been functioning as a portable work surface (with a top on it) into the house.
We put it up on "blocks" so they were up higher. Then I decided that the portable feature would be quite handy as we are finally warming up. So they roll out to the back patio during the day where they can be outside (not in my house making a mess) while it is warm, with their heat plate, then roll them back in at night fall where they hang out with us for a bit until I cover them for the night.
We are using one of the dogs outdoor cots to put on top since they've decided they can fly out already.
So if you happen to see a portable daycare crib in a yard sale or something, snag it - works really well to brood a small number for a while. I'll likely roll them out onto the deck at some point this week to enjoy the sunshine too and the cover will keep them shaded and away from "prey"ing eyes of the hawks.
