Husband and son have been outside all day building me a brooder for my new chicks. I have never raised chicks before. I have had chickens for years but I have always bought them when they were old enough to be outside right from the start. This year we have ordered 12 chicks that will be here on the 23rd. Here are so pics of the progress. It is not finished. Let me know if I am missing anything. There is a lid on hinges, hardware cloth so I can have a peek in (and so they can breathe) a light socket in the back corner for heating bulb, I am going to put in pine shavings and I have food and water containers. Am I missing anything? Oh I am going to keep them inside to start with ( 5-6 weeks) and then they can go into coop. The coop is big enough that I can keep them in the brooder inside the coop if I need to.

You have a nice looking setup for 12 chicks. It should hold them for at least 4 weeks I would think. Also like the light fixture for warmth in the upper corner. Is that a shipping crate you have there? Very nice, indeed!

Thanks everyone! Catdaddy, not a shipping crate, DH just had a couple of sheets of plywood left over from another project and made the box himself.
